The North Tama boys track team competed in the Meskwaki Invitational on Friday, April 5, taking first place amid top finishes across major events and relays on the day.

"I knew we going to have a shot here to be in the top three with the teams coming in and looking at our times we've posted," coach Tyson Roberts. "I feel like Tuesday at Denver was a good jumping point for us in some bad weather, yet tonight it was almost perfect weather to run some PRs."

The sprints saw Tyler Morrison take third place in 100m dash with a time of 11.62, followed by Tate Payne in fifth with a time of 11.79 and Nathan Kucera in 10th place with a time 12.78. In the 200m dash, Noah Weber placed fourth with a time of 25.30 and Kucera in 10th with a time of 26.88. The 400m dash provided points as Logan Brubaker placed fourth with a time of 1:02 and Brady Reichmann in sixth with a time of 1:07. Distance also continued to contribute as Ashton Bradley finished fifth in the 800m run with a time of 2:26, Logan Kennedy and Sam Snyder placing fifth and sixth in the 1600m run respectively and then Snyder taking fourth and Kennedy fifth in the 3200m run.

Tate Payne finished first place in the long jump with a jump of 19’-10.5”, close to his season goal of 20’.

"Our 400 and 800 times keep dropping, but I'm still wanting to see improvements from that area as relays and sprints continue to go strong," Roberts said.

In the 400m hurdles, Cael Even finished first with a time of 1:02 and Gabe Kopriva third with a time of 1:06. In field events, McLean continued his recent streak of top placings in the shot put, throwing for 45'-6". Hale Hulme finished second in the high jump with a final jump of 5'-7". Payne scored first in the long jump with a jump of 19'-10.5", followed by Kucera with a jump of 16'-4".

"Tate is always one we can count on to get first or second in the long jump," Roberts said. "He's close to that 20 foot mark, which is his goal along with being down at State. Ryan McLean threw three feet over his PR to put him in the top 10 in the state or very close."

The relays helped push the Redhawks to their win with several first place finishes. The 4x100 team of Tyler Morrison, Payne, Hulme and Luke Pennell placed second with a time of 46.12, followed by the 4x200 team of Chase and Tyler Morrison, Even and Hulme taking first in the 4x200 with a time of 1:36. The 4x400 team of Adam Greiner, Brubaker, Devin McKinley and Bradley finished fifth, followed by the team sans Reichmann for Greiner placed fourth in the 4x800 with a time of 10:32 to end the night. North Tama's sprint medley team of Weber, Pennell, Kopriva and Greiner finished fourth with a time of 1:50. The boys distance medley continued the Redhawks' success in the relays with Chase Morrison, Pennell, Greiner and Kennedy placing first in the distance medley with a time of 4:07. Finally, the shuttle hurdle team of Tyler Morrison, Even, Kopriva and Hulme continued their quest to State a first place finish of 1:04.

"Everyone ran better times today, even if they didn't get first or second," Roberts said. "Our distance dropped a lot of time, the 400m ran their fastest. It's hard to point out specific people when everyone is running like this. That 4x200 with our seniors dropped another three seconds."

Overall, the Redhawks finished with 142 points to be crowned the winners, taking first over BGM by over 30 points as they competed against fellow 1A schools.

"I don't even know the last time the North Tama boys won a track meet, but I know it's good for them to feel this success," Roberts said. "We have some conference schools here to compare to. Then we turn around and have some of these same schools again on Monday. Tonight showed their hard work can lead to some success."

The Redhawks continued their season at a meet in Tama hosted by GMG on Monday. A meet at Hudson scheduled for Thursday was cancelled due to weather. A makeup date was not posted before online publication.
